Overview of the HBCU Oratorical Challenge

The HBCU Oratorical Challenge is a dynamic, nationwide competition that empowers students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to express their ideas, convictions, and creativity through the art of public speaking. Rooted in the rich rhetorical tradition of the African American experience, this challenge provides a platform for emerging leaders to sharpen their voices, think critically, and engage with the pressing issues of our time.

Inspired by the legendary African American orators who have shaped the soul of our nation, the HBCU Oratorical Challenge celebrates the power of the spoken word. This dynamic competition gives students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities a platform to showcase their eloquence, intellect, and passion—while demonstrating a deep understanding of the issues they address.

If you’re currently enrolled at an HBCU, this is your moment. Step up, speak out, and seize this extraordinary opportunity to make your voice heard.

Students compete in four distinct categories, each designed to cultivate a different aspect of effective communication. Whether delivering a polished speech, responding on the spot, crafting spoken word poetry, or arguing through structured debate, participants are invited to inspire, inform, and ignite change.

Four Competition Areas

Prepared Public Speaking

Contestants deliver a 5–7-minute original speech on a topic aligned with the annual theme. This category emphasizes structure, rhetorical effectiveness, delivery, and persuasive content. Speeches are expected to be memorized and delivered with clarity, emotion, and purpose.

Extemporaneous Public Speaking

Participants are given a current event or relevant social issue and have 30 minutes to prepare a 3–5-minute speech. This category evaluates the speaker’s ability to organize thoughts quickly, communicate under pressure, and demonstrate knowledge, poise, and spontaneity.

Spoken Word Recitation

This artistic category celebrates creative expression, rhythm, and cultural storytelling. Students perform original spoken word pieces (3–5 minutes) that blend performance poetry with themes of identity, justice, or social impact. Judges will assess literary quality, performance, and emotional resonance.

Public Debate

Teams face off in structured debate rounds on selected motions related to ethics, policy, or social justice. This category develops critical thinking, teamwork, and logical argumentation. Competitors are judged on the strength of their reasoning, refutation, delivery, and strategy.
